Organise the documents you actually need.
For an F-1 application, the core documents include your passport, DS-160 confirmation, photograph where required, signed Form I-20 and visa application fee receipt if payment is required before the interview. Keep your I-901 SEVIS fee receipt and appointment confirmation ready too. Follow the appointment instructions for your consular post.
You may also need academic records, test results, evidence of your funding and information about your plans after study. Keep the documents easy to find; make sure names, dates and programme details agree across the file.
Practise clear answers, in your own words.
Prepare for questions about your course, university choice, academic background, funding and plans after graduation. There is no script that guarantees approval. Answer the question asked, then give a relevant detail if it helps.
- Explain a specific course feature, module or research area that fits your goals.
- Know the costs on your I-20 and the documented source of your funding.
- Describe your plans honestly and understand the conditions of F-1 status.
- Ask for clarification if you do not understand a question.
Review your application and online details.
Current US guidance instructs F, M and J visa applicants to make all social media profiles public or open for online-presence screening. Provide the information requested in your application accurately and follow the consular instructions for your appointment.
A practice interview is useful for finding unclear explanations. It should help you speak naturally about your own profile, rather than memorise someone else’s answers.
If your application is refused.
Read the refusal explanation before deciding your next step. A refusal under section 214(b) relates to that application, and there is no appeal process for a 214(b) decision. A new application requires a new fee; consider whether you can address the reason with significant changes in circumstances or relevant additional evidence.
Your questions, answered.
How long should my answers be?
Be concise and specific. There is no official one- or two-sentence rule; give enough detail to answer the question and expand if asked.
Can my parents attend the interview with me?
Follow the access rules in your appointment instructions. Arrangements for accompanying people, minors and assistance vary by consular post.
