Why students choose Germany

Many public undergraduate and consecutive master’s degrees have no tuition, although semester contributions still apply.

Universities of applied sciences can offer a practical alternative to a research-university route.

German language skills can widen internship and career options even when your degree is taught in English.

When can you start?

October (winter semester) is the main start; April (summer semester) exists for selected programmes. Not every English-taught course offers both.

Start dates vary by programme.

Tuition & living costs

Undergraduate tuition · EUR Varies by state & institution Public and private university fees differ
Postgraduate tuition · EUR Varies by course & institution Public, private and continuing-education fees differ
What these tuition figures coverGermany has no single national UG or PG tuition fee. Many public bachelor’s and consecutive master’s courses waive tuition, while semester contributions still apply. Applicable non-EU/EEA students in Baden-Württemberg pay €1,500 per semester (€3,000 for two semesters), with exemptions. Bavarian institutions can set their own non-EU/EEA fees, potentially several thousand euros per semester. Private degrees and continuing-education master’s programmes charge course-specific fees. Check the fee category for your course; semester contributions are additional to tuition.
Semester contribution · separate from tuition €70–€430 Per semester · undergraduate and postgraduate

Typically €70–430 each semester, or €140–860 for two semesters. Contributions fund student services and may include transport. The amount varies by university and is separate from tuition.

Typical living reference / month · EUR €900–€1,200 Housing and daily expenses depend on the city and your choices.

National study-agency monthly planning range for accommodation, food, health insurance, travel and everyday costs. High-cost cities and private housing can exceed it. Semester contributions are additional.

Part-time work & careers

140 full / 280 half days, or 20-hour route

Eligible non-EU study-permit holders can generally work 140 full days or 280 half days yearly; the alternative 20-hours-per-week arrangement has its own calculation rules. Student assistant roles can be treated differently. Confirm the applicable arrangement rather than adding both allowances.

After your degree

Graduates of German higher education may obtain up to 18 months to seek qualified employment, subject to residence requirements. A suitable job can then support the relevant employment residence route.
