Why students choose Austria

Public universities offer a clearly published semester fee for many non-EU students. Applied-science and private institutions set their own charges.

Engineering, science and economics sit alongside architecture, music and arts. Compare the teaching approach as well as the institution.

English-taught options are especially useful at postgraduate level. German opens a wider undergraduate choice and helps with everyday life and employment.

Intakes & start dates

When can you start?

The university calendar normally begins in October, with a summer semester from March. A semester start does not mean every degree accepts new students then: confirm the programme intake, entrance test and earlier international deadline.

Start dates vary by programme.

Tuition & living costs

What these tuition figures coverMany non-EU students at Austrian public universities pay EUR 726.72 per semester, equivalent to EUR 1,453.44 for two semesters. This is a public-university rate for both bachelor’s and master’s study, rather than an average across all Austrian institutions. Exemptions depend on status. The compulsory student-union and accident-insurance charge is EUR 26.20 per semester; applied-science, private and continuing-education programmes set different tuition fees.
Typical living reference / month · EUR €1,300 Housing and daily expenses depend on the city and your choices.

OeAD’s current monthly average is about EUR 1,300, based on the 2025 student social survey (IHS 2026). This is a planning reference, not a rent quote or a visa funding calculation. Vienna and private accommodation can cost more.

Part-time work & careers

Up to 20 hours / week with a permit

Non-EU students generally need their employer to obtain an AMS employment permit. Work of up to 20 hours weekly can be authorised without a labour-market test, but the job must not obstruct studies. Student residence by itself is not permission to begin a job.

After your degree

Eligible graduates holding a Student residence permit can seek a 12-month extension to look for suitable employment or establish a business. Continued residence and a later work route require the relevant conditions and an application.
